About Vidyarambham
What is Vidyarambham?
Aksharabhyasam (Vidyarambham) is the ceremony in which a child, usually between two and five years old, writes the first letters — Om and the first letter of the alphabet — in rice, with the blessings of Saraswati and Ganesha.
It is the samskara that begins formal learning. The child writes Om Namah Shivaya or Hari Sri on rice or on a slate guided by the pandit or an elder, and is then given books and a pen. Many families do it on Vijayadashami, Vasant Panchami or at Basara or Wargal Saraswati temples.
